Although this prayer is meant to be said immediately upon waking up at the beginning of the day; some liturgies also include it as part of the Shaḫarit/Morning service on Shabbat and weekdays.The reference to restoring one's soul after a night's rest is due in part to beliefs that sleep is a form of death, and the soul wanders in the night. Awaking to a new day, and new possibilities is, therefore, a sign of God's compassion.
