work
As of now, I have accepted an offer to work with The MITRE Corporation as as a "Senior Artificial Intelligence Engineer" which is what they call their computational linguists. Honestly, if half the recruiting pitch is true, I couldn't have dreamt up a better professional environment. They have a large number (15 or more) of linguists on staff, a collegial atmosphere, and they encourage their researchers in word and deed to publish and participate in the academic community.
Recent Projects at my former employer
All my work at Essex revolves around various tasks in Natural Language Processing, particularly in the area of Information Extraction. The platform used at Essex is the Graph Expression Language (GEL) developed within the company as a sort of swiss-army knife for symbolic computing. Initially based on XPath, GEL uses graphs as a basic data type. Our NLP technologies use heavily on graph-theoretic approaches to cognitive computing. For information on GEL or on NLP efforts at Essex, the best person to contact would be Tim Bryant (bryantatessexcorpdotcom).
My current area of interest is applying the theory of conceptual spaces (as conceived by cognitive linguists and seen by Peter Gärdenfors) to areas of both information Exraction and cognitive modelling.
